Things Heat up in the Desert…

The 2009 Golf Channel Amateur Tour Seattle season, officially wrapped up with the crowning of the 12 Individual and the Team National Champions in La Quinta , CA on September 27th. The story of the week had to be the unseasonably hot weather with avg. highs around 110 degrees, including 114 during the third round of Individual play.

Thirty Players from the Seattle Tour qualified and participated at the Nationals

and 6 of them made the 54 hole cut, with 4 finishing in the top 10 for their respective flights.

James Woods (Spanaway) 3rd Place – Jones Flight

Don Harrell (Everett) 4th – Sr. Jones Flight

Jeff Ross (Mercer Island) 8th – Sr. Hogan Flight

Mike Joaquin (Surrey, BC) 10th  – Palmer Flight

Based on their top 5 finishes, James and Don are exempt into the 2010 National Championships which will be held at TPC Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour’s Players Championship. The 2010 location was announced during the Player’s welcome dinner on September 21st, which also included a panel discussion and Q&A session with GOLF CHANNEL “on air talent” Charlie Rymer, Rich Lerner and Kelly Tilghman. For the Team dinner on Friday the 25th, Tom Abbott, Adam Barr and Kraig Kann from Golf Channel entertained the crowd with personal anecdotes regarding Tiger Woods, Tom Watson, VJ Singh and other golf personalities.

If you haven’t heard about Charlie Reiter yet, you might want to take note. Charlie is a Player on the Palm Springs Tour who was crowned as the Jones Flight National Champion. He shares  the qualities you find in many of the Amateur Tour Players. He’s very competitive, has a keen interest in the game’s history, works hard to improve and hopes one day to take his game to the ultimate level, the PGA Tour.

Charlie does have a couple of qualities that set him apart from his Amateur Tour peers. He dresses for all his tournaments just like his idol Payne Stewart. From the driving cap and knickers down to the high socks, he is a picture of golf style. Oh, and the other thing that sets him apart, he’s 10 years old! That’s right, Charlie posted rounds of 88-84-84-88 to capture the National Title over 49 other qualifiers from across the nation, some of them with grandchildren older than Charlie!
